Part-Time Pay, Work Hours & Taxes for Students in Korea (2026)
Start with your real take-home pay
Taxes on student part-time work in Korea are not just “hourly wage × hours.” For 2026, you need to read minimum wage, D-2/D-4 work-hour limits, withholding type, and possible 4대보험 deductions together.
Check three things before you start: the scope of your part-time work permission, the hourly wage and break time in your labor contract, and how the pay will be reported. For immigration permission, read D-2/D-4 part-time work permit guide. For contract items, use labor contract checklist for foreign students.
2026 minimum wage and student work-hour limits
Under the Ministry of Employment and Labor notice, Korea’s 2026 minimum wage is KRW 10,320 per hour. This is a gross hourly wage, so your actual deposit is calculated after withholding and possible insurance deductions. The official source is the MOEL 2026 minimum wage notice.
For international students, the legal work-hour limit matters as much as wage. Immigration guidance for D-2/D-4 part-time work varies by status, program, Korean-language level, school confirmation, and workplace. Undergraduate students who meet the language condition are often guided around 25 weekday hours during the semester, graduate students around 30, while D-4 Korean language trainees usually have separate conditions such as six months of stay. See the official part-time work guidance for foreign students.
Tax and permitted hours may differ by visa status, working hours, and income type. The exact tax amount and allowed work hours should be checked with the relevant tax office, immigration office, and employer.
Withholding tax and the four social insurances
A common misunderstanding is, “If 3.3% is withheld, does that mean the job is legal?” If pay is reported as wage income, withholding works differently from a business-income style report. If you sign a labor contract, work fixed shifts, and follow the employer’s direction, the 3.3% label alone does not settle the issue.
Wage income is normally withheld by the employer using the applicable payroll rules. For withholding-target business income, the National Tax Service lists 3%; in practice, it is commonly explained as 3.3% after adding local income tax. See the NTS withholding tax rates.
Korea’s “4대보험” means National Pension, National Health Insurance, Employment Insurance, and Industrial Accident Compensation Insurance. For foreign students, application depends on nationality, stay status, workplace, monthly working hours, and whether you are treated as an employee.
Refund possibility and documents to keep
Tax withheld from pay is not always the final tax. Wage earners usually settle annual tax through the employer’s year-end settlement. If your pay was reported as business income, you usually review it through the comprehensive income tax filing in May of the following year. A refund may arise when your final tax is lower than the amount already withheld.
Keep your labor contract, payslips, work schedule, and bank deposit records. Your 외국인등록증(thẻ người nước ngoài, Alien Registration Card) information should match payroll records. If you are in your first weeks in Korea, Korea arrival week-one checklist can help you align your Alien Registration Card, bank account, and basic administrative steps before working.
FAQ
Is the job fine if the hourly wage is above minimum wage?
Not by wage alone. Hourly wage is only the starting point. Unpaid break time, weekly paid holiday allowance conditions, income reporting type, and insurance deductions can change your take-home pay. Check whether the payslip separates gross pay, deductions, and net pay.
Can I get a refund if 3.3% was withheld?
It is possible, but the result depends on total income, deductible expenses, other income, and tax residency. Before the May filing season, check your 지급명세서 payment statement and withholding records on Hometax.
What should I check before starting work?
- Whether you are eligible for part-time work permission and the allowed hours
- Whether the contract states hourly wage, shifts, break time, and payday
- How the income will be reported and whether 4대보험 applies
