How Foreign Students Open a Korean Bank Account (2026)

Other languages:Tiếng Việt한국어

The first answer after arrival: your ARC status matters

Opening a Korean bank account as a foreign student depends heavily on whether you already have your 외국인등록증, or Alien Registration Card, also called ARC as of July 2026. Right after arrival, some branches may consult with your passport, but mobile banking, check card issuance, and transfer limits may not all be available on day one.

Your safest order is to check a campus-area branch or a bank page for foreign customers, then bring your passport, proof of enrollment, Korean address, and Korean phone number together. For the wider arrival sequence, use the Korea arrival week 1 checklist together with this guide.

July 2026 document checklist

  • Original passport
  • ARC or mobile ARC, or proof of local residence if your ARC has not been issued yet
  • Certificate of enrollment, admission letter, or student ID if requested by the bank
  • Korean address, dorm confirmation, lease contract, or other document that explains where you live
  • Korean mobile number under your name and a smartphone that can install the banking app
  • Home-country tax identification number, overseas address, and overseas contact details for tax residency checks
💡
Before your ARC is issued, an account may be opened with narrower functions. Check card issuance, internet banking, overseas remittance, or transfer limits may require a later update after you receive your ARC.

Before vs. after ARC, and limited accounts

Before you have an ARC, the bank may need extra proof of your address and stay in Korea. After you receive the ARC, real-name verification, D-2 or D-4 student status, and Korean address checks are usually clearer, so mobile banking registration and check card consultation tend to be smoother.

If you cannot provide enough evidence for the account purpose, the bank may open a limited account, known in Korean as 한도제한계좌. Korea’s Financial Services Commission describes this account type as one used when customers have difficulty submitting objective documents for transaction-purpose verification, and its May 2, 2024 notice also addressed higher daily transaction limits. Actual limits and release conditions can differ by bank, branch, visa status, and timing, so confirm with the bank handling your account.

Mobile banking, check cards, and student-friendly branches

Mobile banking may need a separate application, or the branch may set it up together with security media and authentication steps. If your Korean phone number is not under your own name, app verification, quick transfers, and online payments may fail. Review the SIM before ARC guide before choosing the banking day.

A check card is useful for daily spending, and some cards include transit functions, but passport-only issuance may be limited. Woori Bank’s foreign student guide, for example, separates guidance for checking accounts, internet or smart banking, and check cards. Before visiting, check whether your university has an on-campus branch, whether nearby branches serve foreign customers, and whether foreign-language support is available.

FAQ

Can I open an account without an ARC?

Some branches may guide passport-based opening, but that does not mean every function will be available immediately. You may be asked for proof of address, school documents, or home-country identification information, and your account functions may expand only after your ARC is registered with the bank.

Should I update the bank when my address changes?

Yes, it is usually better to keep your bank customer profile aligned with your current Korean address, separately from immigration reporting. If you move from a dorm to a studio or change your mailing address, read the student address change report guide and then update your bank profile in the app or at a branch.
